When I was at the worst with my acne, I desperately wanted to wake up one morning and have it better, but that was completely unrealistic. However, that didn’t stop me from trying every product that claimed it would clear up even the most stubborn acne. Well, let me tell you there is a lot of false advertising out there in my eyes.
While maybe it helped one person clear their skin along the way, most of those products heavily dried out my sensitive skin. I was applying product after product in hopes that one would magically work but to be honest I ended up with cracked skin, which led to more acne. That’s when I finally decided to try one product at a time and go the natural route.
Sure, salcilic acid kills bacteria, but for individuals with sensitive skin it was taking a huge toll on my skin. So I threw out the bottles of face wash, spot treatments, and deep cleansers because my skin had shown me that was not going to work. On Pinterest, I found the Just Natural Acne face and body cleanser and ordered it online. I did an in-depth review on this product here, that I highly recommend as it is not only priced extremely well but one bottle lasts forever.
I used it in the morning, and at night when I showered after working out, twice a day and no other products. A week was all it took to see my skin slowly changing. Not an overnight miracle but enough of a change that I noticed.
I then began using a hydrating mask every couple of days as I tried to balance my skin back out from all the excessive drying. This Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Masque has ingredients to promote a higher cell turnover rate; however, this is one of two products that I use that I wouldn’t consider natural but it is extremely soothing for sensitive skin. While it is a little more pricy, a little goes a long way, and I think it is worth it especially in the winter when my face gets wind burned from walking to class.
Since I shower at night, I like to keep it on until I get ready for bed to get the most hydration possible. The directions on it says 10-15 minutes and then rub excess into skin but when I tried that most of it was on my pillow in the morning.
During this time, I was moving through different moisturizers trying to find one that wouldn’t make me too greasy or one that was too light to keep my skin moisturized throughout the day. I used Cetaphil for awhile but when it got colder I needed a little more help and turned to amazon reviews. I came across this Eau Thermale Avène Skin Recovery Cream which every time I order it, the product comes with everything in French; however, it was the cheaper one so I don’t complain. I don’t need to read the directions to put on moisturizer.
This product was perfect for every day in the winter but got a little too greasy as summer approached and my face was looking so much better. So then I bought SkinActive Clearly Brighter Brightening & Smoothing Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 because it had spf in it along with the claim that it would reduce scaring, which I had a lot of (the marketing department got me again!). While I may have fallen for the advertising again this time it actually worked. I noticed the scaring fading and my skin stayed hydrated throughout the day so this has been my moisturizer for the summer and into the fall so far.
As my face has cleared up and I’ve been working to get the deep dirt out, I’ve had a few pimples pop up. Since I had cystic acne the dirt was so deep that it is harder to get out in my opinion, I’m by no means a doctor.
For spot treating these pimples, I use Kiehls Blue Herbal Treatment. I’ve moved back and forth about where I buy it from as I am always looking for the better deal. Lately Nordstrom has had it at a lower price and they offer free shipping and returns, but you won’t want to return this. It’s a small tube but a little goes a long way and truly gets the pimple to shrink throughout the day or night.
Cleansing Deep Face Mask
I just recently did a in-depth review on Pure Body Naturals Beauty Dead Sea Mud Mask for Facial Treatment, but wanted to mention here as well. It is important to get the dirt out from deep inside your pores. I love this mask because I feel like I am at a spa due to it’s high quality and I also scare my cat, which is fun since she scares me every other day of the week.
My all time favorite make-up remover or I also use it as a substitute after working out if I don’t have time to wash my face. SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Cleanser & Makeup Remover is my favorite make-up remover due to its ability to actually get the make-up and dirt off my face. The only thing I don’t like about it is that when I travel it is another liquid in my carry on. That one downfall is not enough to keep me from using it, love it so much.
So there you have it–my face routine since having the worst acne in my life. This is the routine I still use now as the scarring is fading and pimples are less. Try out a product at a time so you know which one works incase your skin reacts badly.
